SNAILBEACH

Stiperstones 1 mile; Shrewsbury 10 miles.

This tiny village stands on the slopes of the Rea Valley, close to the Shropshire plateau. Renowned for lead mining since Roman times, the area now holds a reputation for outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling and birdwatching. The wonderful Stiperstones are only one mile away, capped by great outcrops of rock, the most famous known as the Devil's Chair. Today this beautiful area is referred to as "Mary Webb country" as it inspired her novels The Golden Arrow, Precious Bane and Gone To Earth. Nearby is Shrewsbury, often considered one of England's finest towns, famous for its timber framed, black and white buildings. There are excellent shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as Shrewsbury Abbey, the lovely Quarry Park (home to the famous Shrewsbury Flower Show each August), picturesque riverside walks and pleasure boat trips. An excellent base to explore beautiful Shropshire.

Unexpectedly picturesque situation of the Smithy - and superb views from the kitchen/dining room. Excellent position for exploring Shropshire.

The cottage was set in a stunning and quiet location but with close enough contact to the main town and surrounding areas. The cottage was furnished well with all mod cons to enable you to have an enjoyable holiday. The owner was gracious with a bottle of wine waiting and made himself contactable should any issue arise. I like the notes laid out and the various leaflets for things to do. We even had a compass and map for the surrounding Stiperstones. The weather was excellent and our two weeks was perfect after all the rain we have had. Even if it had rained heavily the cosy and inspiring view from any front room was enough to make you chill out. We as a family with 3 children (all teenagers) enjoyed it. We were sad to leave and we would stay again. Excellent pub nearby 'The Stiperstones Inn'.

The cottage was very well equipped and had interesting little details. It was very spacious and there were good views. It was in a very good location with a variety of footpaths right on the doorstep. Ideal for keen walkers. The owner was friendly and helpful.

Lovely views outside, great attention to detail inside - DAB radios, soaps, tea-towels, labelled maps, books and DVDs. The property felt generous and welcoming and the location was great for both walking and more touristy attractions. My son's comment on day one of the holiday summed up how comfortable we all felt: 'Can we come here for our NEXT holiday?'

The Smithy was an excellent touring base for exploring some hidden corners of England. We particularly liked the aspect with the lovely views across tree lined fields to the hills in the distance.
